How to Recover Deleted WhatsApp Messages

How to Recover Deleted WhatsApp Messages

Have you ever deleted a WhatsApp chat by accident and immediately regretted it? Wondering if there is a way to get it back? Don’t worry, we are here to help. We share a way to recover deleted WhatsApp chats and a method to recover WhatsApp chats that have been overwritten by an iCloud or Google Drive backup. Before you try the steps, you should keep in mind that you can only restore chats if the backup option was initially enabled on WhatsApp. This means that if you have never backed up your chats, you cannot restore messages or chats that you have accidentally deleted.

How to Recover Deleted WhatsApp Messages

Another thing we should point out is that we tested these methods to recover deleted WhatsApp chats and they worked for us, but these methods include removing WhatsApp and recovering the most recent backup. This may mean that you lose some messages that have arrived between the time of your last backup and when you accidentally deleted a chat. Either way, use extreme caution and follow these steps only if recovering the deleted WhatsApp messages is important enough to potentially lose data. Gadgets 360 is not responsible for any data loss, so go at your own risk.

To enable chat backup, open WhatsApp, go to Settings> go to Chats> tap Chat Backup. Here you can set the frequency of your chat backup between never, daily, weekly or monthly, or you can even make a manual backup. In addition, you must select the Google account where you want to save the backup if you use an Android smartphone.

And if you’re an iPhone user, go to Settings in WhatsApp> Chats> Chat backup, where you can select the frequency for Automatic backup or Use a backup now to manually back up to iCloud. start.

Let’s start.

How to restore deleted WhatsApp chats

Here’s how to restore deleted WhatsApp chats using various methods.

Recover deleted WhatsApp chats via cloud backup
If you have accidentally deleted chats, there is a chance that the chat was present on your cloud backup. Suppose your Google Drive or iCloud backup took place at midnight and accidentally deleted a chat in the morning. The cloud backup still has the chat and you can restore it. Here’s how:

Remove WhatsApp from your Android smartphone or iPhone.

  • Reinstall WhatsApp and set it with your phone number.
  • After the app is set up, you will be asked to restore messages from a cloud backup. This backup would come from Google Drive on Android and iCloud on iOS. Tap Restore.
  • This returns the messages that you have accidentally deleted. Note that if you received a message after your most recent cloud backup and deleted it, there is no way to restore it.

Recover deleted WhatsApp chats via the local Android backup
Another way to restore deleted WhatsApp chats is to restore them from local backups on your Android phone. This method does not work on iOS. If your Google Drive backup has overwritten the deleted messages, follow these steps.

  • Go to File Manager on your phone (download the Files app from Google if you cannot find this app). Now go to the WhatsApp> Database folder. The Database folder contains all WhatsApp backup files that are stored locally on your phone.
  • Select the msgstore.db.crypt12 file and rename it to msgstore_BACKUP.db.crypt12. This is your most recent backup file and you must rename it to prevent it from being overwritten. If something goes wrong, you can always give this file its original name and restore it.
  • You will now see a number of files in this folder in the msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12 format. These are your older WhatsApp backups, you can choose the most recent backup and rename it to msgstore.db.crypt12.
  • Here’s the tricky part: you have to open Google Drive on your smartphone, tap the hamburger icon (the three vertical lines)> Backups. Now delete the WhatsApp backup there. This forces your phone to restore the local backup instead.
  • Remove WhatsApp now and install it again. Set it up and when you’re done, you’ll be prompted to restore chats from a local backup, since you don’t have chat backup in the cloud.
  • Tap Restore and that’s all. You will receive your deleted chats.

So these are the two methods you can use in a situation where you have accidentally deleted your WhatsApp chats or in a situation where you have installed WhatsApp again and want your old chats back. Either way, as we mentioned above, the Chat backup option must be enabled to restore messages.
